Are We Listening?

One of my favorite devotional writers, Frederick Buechner, wrote, "Don't miss those moments when God speaks to you, as he did in a funny way to me through the bird in song this morning, as he does to all of us, in all sorts of ways, and all of the time" (The Remarkable Ordinary).

Does God - the Sacred, the Divine - speak to us in such ordinary, earthy ways as the song of a bird?  Or the beauty of a butterfly?  Or the delicacy of a wildflower?  Or in the stranger ringing the Salvation Army bell at the grocery store entrance?  I have come to believe that it is so.

The speaker in the book of Job appears to agree. The issue may not be whether God is speaking, but  whether we are always open to listening.
